Process & Information
When it comes to home maintenance, deck staining is an important and necessary task that should be done on a regular basis. Decks that are exposed to the elements can become faded, stained, and rotted over time. When it's time to restore lean on the pro's at Ardsley Pressure Washing for the results you need.
Cleaning the deck🧼
The first step in deck staining and restoration is to clean the deck. At APW we tailor our approach to every deck based on the level of leftover stain, algae, moss and other surface contaminants. When cleaning and or stripping a deck we use a multi step cleaning process in order to enhance the natural wood tones and achieve that natural golden brown we all desire in a deck.
Types of Stain🎨
When it comes to deck staining and restoration, there are a few different types of stains that can be used.
These include:
1. Oil-based stains
2.Water-based stain
Oil-based stains are the most durable, but they take the longest to dry and are more difficult to apply. Water-based stains provide a more uniform color but don’t last as long.
Stain Opacities🖌️
1. Translucent - These come in natural tones or light grays and offer minimal pigment. They show the most amount of wood grain and offer the least amount of UV protection and longevity. This is a good option for decks with brand new wood that should be shown off.
2. Semi Transparent - These come in more colors, offer more durability and longevity then translucent, and still allow a lot of wood grain to show through. This is a good option for decks in good shape with minimal imperfections.
3. Semi Solid - Offers more durability and longevity than the prior two stain opacities but it will cover more of the wood grain. This is a better option for older decks with more imperfections.
4. Solid Stain - Offers the most durability and longevity whilst covering most of the wood grain. Best suited for owners with older decks or owners who would prefer a lower maintenance finish.
More Prep & Sanding👷
At APW we sand multiple times over to prevent the risks of splinters and to also promote proper adhesion and absorption of the stain product. We tape off siding and other miscellaneous areas, as well as resetting nails.
Maintaining the Finish👍
Deck staining is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process. However, with regular maintenance, your deck will continue to look great for years to come. The key is to make sure that the initial cleaning and staining is done properly. This will ensure that the deck looks great and lasts as long as possible. It’s also important to remember that deck staining and restoration is an ongoing process. Depending on the climate and other factors, it may be necessary to repeat the process every couple of years. This will help to keep the deck looking its best and ensure that it will last for years to come.
