Cleaning Stucco Siding: How to Bring Your Home’s Exterior Back to Life

Stucco is a popular siding material for homes and businesses, and it looks great when it’s freshly painted. Unfortunately, over time, dirt and debris can build up, leaving the siding looking dull and discolored. Fortunately, the good news is that, with the proper steps and techniques, you can easily clean stucco siding and bring it back to life. Before you start cleaning your stucco siding, it’s important to know what type of stucco you have. Traditional stucco is made from a mixture of cement, sand, and water, and it’s usually painted. Synthetic stucco, also known as EIFS (Exterior Insulated Finish System), is a layered system of foam insulation and acrylic coating.

The first step in cleaning stucco is to do some basic maintenance. You’ll want to use a pressure washer to remove any loose dirt and debris. Be sure to hold the pressure washer at least 6” away from the siding to prevent any damage. You can also use a garden hose and a stiff-bristled brush to help remove any stubborn dirt or debris.Once you’ve removed the loose dirt and debris, it’s time to apply a cleaner. For traditional stucco, you’ll want to use a cleaner specifically designed for stucco siding. For synthetic stucco, you’ll want to use a mild detergent. Be sure to read the instructions on the cleaner and follow them closely.Once you’ve applied the cleaner, let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. This will allow the cleaner to penetrate the stucco and loosen up any caked-on dirt and debris. After the allotted time, you’ll want to use a soft-bristled brush or a sponge to gently scrub the siding. Be sure to avoid using any abrasive materials, as this can damage the stucco.

Once you’ve finished scrubbing, rinse the siding with a garden hose. If you had used a pressure washer, you’ll want to make sure that all of the cleaner has been rinsed away. For traditional stucco, you’ll also want to apply a sealer to protect the siding from future dirt and debris.Cleaning stucco siding is a relatively easy process, and it can help bring your home’s exterior back to life. With the proper steps and techniques, you can have your stucco siding looking like new in no time. Be sure to use the right cleaner and take your time when scrubbing and rinsing the siding to ensure the best results.
